Bid Description: UCLA: (RFQ) Boelter Hall 3rd Floor Robotics Department Renovation. Executive Architect for the proposed UCLA Boelter Hall 3rd Floor Robotics Department Renovation (Project #907033.01). Boelter Hall, part of the Samueli School of Engineering & Applied Science, is located on UCLA Campus at 580 Portola Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90095. Boelter Hall was constructed in 1959 and is an approximately 448,027 gsf building comprised of five seismically separated structures varying in height between seven and eight stories. The proposed project location is within the Boelter Hall West portion of the building. The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (HSSEAS) desires to develop approximately 8,700 sq. ft. of vacant space in Room 3815 on the 3rd floor of Boelter Hall West into a Robotics Institute. Approximately 1,300 sq. ft. of adjacent outdoor balcony area may also be included as a programming area. During the 2016-17 academic year, the School engaged in a strategic planning exercise that identified robotics (and cyber-physical systems generally) as one of three major areas of future focus for its research programs. Currently, most applicants to the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department's graduate program identify robotics as their primary area of interest. In keeping with the HSSEAS strategic plan and student interest, the intention is to establish a robotics institute in approximately 8,700 sq. ft. of vacant space, Room 3815, on the 3rd floor of Boelter Hall. This space was vacated by the Computer Science Department when it moved to Engineering VI, thereby providing the School with an opportunity to create ample, contiguous space for interdisciplinary research that will involve faculty primarily from MAE, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science. The co-location of faculty and students from these departments will promote interdisciplinary research, enable the sharing of expensive equipment and technical staff, and enhance the recruitment of faculty and graduate students. The proposed renovations will include building improvements. Building upgrades will consist of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety work, and ADA-triggered scope. The scope may be prioritized or phased to align with available funds. The implementation of the project is dependent upon the availability of funding. The construction cost for the project has not yet been determined and is dependent upon phasing. The work may be executed in several incremental projects and is anticipated to be in the range of $2.5 ¿ $3 million for the first phase, dependent on the agreed scope of work. As applicable, and based on the specific scope of work required, the design shall comply with the University of California Policy on Sustainable Practices. The final selection and appointment of the Executive Architect are contingent upon project approval by the University of California Board of Regents or their delegated authority. This RFQ is for complete design services; however, the University reserves the right to defer negotiations for uses other than pre-design studies until the completion of the pre-design phase.
